Northern Territory
The eucalyptus -dominated savanna woodlands, monsoon forests, floodplains, and billabongs of the top end of the Northern Territory are just some of the environments of this area which is so uniquely Australian in character. The plaintive cries of Stone Curlews, together with the calls of the Red-tailed Black Cockatoos and Corellas, and the harsh cackling of Blue-winged Kookaburras, are common at dawn and dusk.

Listen to a sample: Chorus of birds at dusk, lagoon near Humpty Doo, Northern Territory (near Darwin).

Kangaroo Island
The dense mallee scrub, eucalyptus forest, and heaths of Kangaroo Island are home to many native Australian plants and animals, including over 50 species of orchids, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, possums, and bandicoots and nearly 130 species of birds. At dusk, the grunting of Cape Barren Geese and screeching of parakeets can almost be deafening, with the softer lyrical calls of the Australian Magpies, and the peculiar rumbling of Koala Bears in the distance.

Listen to a sample: Cape Barren Geese and other birds at a meadow near Black Swamp, Kangaroo Island, South Australia.
